June 29, 2012

Two projects are now in the works. I've intentionally stopped working at night just to be able to take more pictures of works in progress. I try to wait until the sun sets behind the trees so that it's cooler. Also, by waiting, I don't have to wear sunglasses. If I don't wait, every time that I turn west, the sun drills into my eyes. It's actually painful.

The side bed, I've decided, should get a slash layer under it. Notice how the upper layer of dirt is so dark. This is suspicious. After talking to the neighbors, I learned that my grandfather, several years ago, had brought in a load of topsoil. Apparently, this is the remnant. This side bed, as I said in the last post, helps shape and stabilize the ramp. It, also, helps to keep the area level with the neighbors yard.
As I got deeper, notice how sandy the soil became. No sweat. Even better, no roots or stumps.

The urbanite for the retaining wall on the south end, around the pear trees. Hope it's enough, and that's not a joke.

My supply of urbanite is doing me well. It's of a consistent thickness and breaks with clean lines. It's like a giant jigsaw puzzle with low tolerance. I built a second cross terrace. It's three blocks high. It helps establish a lower ramp blended into the second-tier ramp. The zone formed by the cross terrace might become an herb bed.
Just more views of the urbanite stock.

I'm fascinated that even with all of that dirt on top of it, the plants still want to grow out of the original grass line. Even the clumps of grass have started to grow out of the pile. The only way to kill those clumps is to make sure that the roots are completely exposed to the sun.
